A LETTER FROM WINDSOR POLICE DEPUTY CHIEF

Ms Oneschuk,

You are correct in that the Windsor Police Service did send members to support security efforts in Toronto for the G-20 Summit. The Toronto request was for our officers to attend on Monday 21 June 2010 to commence their orientation and training, and to return to Windsor on Monday 28 June 2010. Our obligation to our own community regarding the Annual Fireworks Display held on 21 June 2010 with rain date of 22 June 2010 would not allow us to send our officers until 23 June 2010. The vast majority of our officers that were sent to Toronto worked midnight shifts for both fireworks night and the rain date. They completed their responsibilities here and boarded a bus minutes after completion of their shift and headed to Toronto that morning.

The original agreement with Toronto was for Windsor officers to return home on the morning of Monday, 28 June 2010. As you are obviously aware, several unfortunate actions increased the necessity for security to be extended. The Windsor officers were requested to stay longer by Toronto to assist in continued security issues and permission was granted to do so by the command of our Service. Our officers worked an additional night shift in Toronto and returned home 1 day after originally expecting. They did not return home early, but in fact, remained 1 day longer then originally agreed to.

I personally attended a portion of our deployment in Toronto and spent time in the early morning hours with our officers on scene. I also witnessed many protest marches that had police presence, mostly to provide safety at intersections and security through the protest routes for those groups wishing to exercise their right to free speech. I personally witnessed many instances that could be described very much like your experience here in Windsor. In my mind, they were exactly what democracy is all about and I was very proud to point out to others exactly that; police providing security and a safe environment to allow people to voice their concerns in a non violent manner. This was so, even as many others were inconvenienced at intersections by holding up traffic for several cycles of lights so protestors could move through busy intersections in a safe manner.

I applaud you for taking the initiative to seek the "other side of the story" and not to allow rumor and innuendo to be the foundation for unfounded and unfortunate information. The Windsor Police Service is very proud of the manner in which our officers deployed in Toronto to support democracy and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

I wish you well and again, thank you for taking the time to ask.
