Eye Witness Accounts

by: James

Let me start off by saying that I am a electrician by trade but I am also a retail display photographer so shooting display windows for stores like The Bay and Holt Renfrew as well as my good friends store Le Chateau so I was worried about their windows from Saturdays Events. So Sunday my day started of from going across the street to my local Starbucks for a Latte only to find them closed due to what happened on Saturday as yes I live right downtown Toronto so going out my door is like going to Toronto Eaton Centre. So I came back and got my camera and went out for a walk maybe take some pictures like I always do but retail pictures in a different way as most stores boarded up their windows. During my walk up to Bloor St I decided to walk along Bay St and I notice people getting searched by the police as I didn't want any news that day but they were searching people for no reason. So when I got to Bloor I was so happy I FOUND my Latte at another coffee shop as every Starbucks was close as they were not taking any chances. So as I was drinking my Latte I checked on my friends store at Bloor and it was ok. Holt Renfrew boarded up their windows so yah they were ok as well but most or all the stores up that high were ok so I decided to walk back down Yonge St . When I got to College and Yonge at the College Park building I notice the Police were arresting a group of people so curious me went over to look like the rest of the people as everyone had cameras and all were taking pictures. So when I got closer I overheard a cop yell out at us to take a picture of these Dogs which upset me as who are you to say that as I thought they were professional so then we started to take some pictures and I stuck around as more people around will keep the cops in check but then I was shock to see the cops turn to take pictures of them so they wrote their names on a writing board with the date and a number and basically we all saw their names as what happen to their rights did they have any and a person stated by yelling out their names and call them a terrorist as if these were real terrorist there would be nothing left of Toronto including it's people as they were all ready on trial even before seeing the judge.. then more teens came along and they were stopped too as ok arrest all the punk rockers I was thinking oh great but out of the four new kids they stopped they let three of them go and the fourth one may had a joint or a pocket knife as I later found out having a little Swiss Army pocket knife can land you in jail! So after all of this I decided to walk to Queen and Spadina where my friends other store was only this was the biggest mistake of my life so as I was walking to Spadina along Queen looking at some stores along Queen that were damaged as I will lightly say by the cops as they did let this happen I finally reached my friends store and to find it all ok. The Streets were empty hardly anyone around so what a good time to snap some window shots I said nobody no cars way cool but two security guards in front of the H&M shop so I went over and chat with them for a bit and I watched some people going here and there like a everyday normal thing and was thinking maybe the big protest are all over with but as soon as I was thinking that here they come all walking west on Queen so what do I do I checked to see if it was peaceful and it was people were laughing and signing so I walked over to the CIBC bank wall to watch (big mistake) and to shoot some images and there were cops following them on bikes like they normally do so nothing was said to me so I stayed and watched as people were walking by minding their own business even a family with their three children and one was a new born and the proud father sitting on the bench ... Ok I thought this was a peaceful protest Then some riot cops showed up not to many of them but I was thinking they were there just in case I seen some people leave and I was ready to leave if things gone wrong but nothing went wrong and then all hell broke loose. The riot cops next to me started to advance and told us to leave the area so I took that hint along with other people and we went where they told us to go only to find more riot cops blocking our way we spoke to them and said we were told to leave and the reply was your not leaving and then they to the MOVE on us and we said where do you want us to go and no answer we were being pushed together like a heard of cattle and we kept asking to leave and some girl broke out crying she wanted just to go home as she was just walking by on the way home and they said no one leaves then this poor girl started to shake in fear and I looked at them in disgust how could they . So now were not aloud to leave so I stood there then we heard a cop yell out your all under arrest and a dead silence came over the crowd like everyone was in shock as we were innocent and most in my area were only walking home from the Bar or from work and we were all under arrest how could they. No one was giving us any direction but I witness some cops running in the crowd and snatching people out of the crowd but still nothing and then the sky darkened and we knew we were in for some rain and lucky I brought my umbrella that day and lucky for the people around me as the sky opened up and we all started to get wet and it was raining hard but the police didn't do a thing to help us out we were all getting wet I seen people shivering and girls crying to go home and one girl begging a CP24 reporter to get her out of there and it was so bad but there is nothing we could do but to stand there and get wet ... a hour passed by and as it must be close to five hours since this started and I notice the crowd was getting smaller so one person from our group wanted answers on how do we get out of their and he came back to say just line up and get arrested is all we had to do as that was our only choice to get out of their so I lined up and I had to put my camera in my wet bag along with my umbrella and now I too was standing out in the rain. So it was my turn as they handcuffed me and I was assigned a cop to take my information form me so he took my wallet as I couldn't help as my hands were tied and started to take my information and he put all my belongings into a plastic bag and it was a long time being handcuffed as the line was a mile long with people waiting to be taken away! I was so scared as I heard about this temp holding cells on Eastern Ave and didn't want to go there but in the mean time I was taking to my cop and he was from the 43 Division as he was Metro and seemed like a nice guy as I told him to please check on my hands as they were getting numb and he changed my plastic cuffs for bigger ones and not as tight as the last ones he could sense I was not a violent person as I followed him where ever her went to as we tried to get in lline after all my information was taken but it was taking forever to get out of there then a bunch of empty TTC buses arrived and lucky for us we got to go to them finally out of the rain!! I was the first one on one of the busses and man was it cold so I asked the driver to turn off the air as we were all shaking from the rain it was miserable out there and she did and I thanked her for that and as soon as other people got on they thanked the bus driver as well.. By this time I was in my handcuffs for close to 2 hours and my shoulder was killing me I wanted to die from the pain of it so I asked my officer could he please handcuff me with my hands if front of me as I explained part of my job as a electrician my arms are always up into the air so at my age it's your knees and arms that go first so he made a phone call to see if I had a record and when he got off the phone he smiled at me and said I didn't have a record and he took my hands in front of me I was ever so thankful as it was killing me my shoulder. Then a few minutes later a another cop came on the bus and told everyone will be set Free to go and that was it we were all cut loose and sorry for the trouble as I never looked back I was out of there so fast and never looked back . I gather my belonging as now my camera took some damaged as I learning this night is now going to cost me and I learned that it was the best thing to be over by the bank as everyone that was in front went to Eastern Ave and never got out till the next day All I have to say the cops were in the wrong and they have to answer for what they done to us as they lost the trust so many had for them which they worked so hard to earn ...
